“Mitchell’s art-science is infused with these colonial histories as she projects her hybrid insectivas-vegetalis creations into a future where survival may depend on the evolution of interspecies and their mutually beneficial symbiotic relations. Her works are reminiscent of a breed of ecological steam punk where the past meets the future and art meets science through the collecting of “forest detritus” and a practice of “vegan taxidermy”. Here too, the science of entomology meets the linguistics of etymology in Mitchell’s zoo-bio nomenclature and precise descriptions of each specimen’s discovery, life cycle, and habitat via a QR portal.”
